Tourist taxes landed in Manchester
Manchester introduced a tourist tax in April 2023, to some surprise. Who would want to go to Manchester instead of Mallorca or Malta, for alliterative effect, many asked.
And yet.
Once the smirks had subsided and the mirth dissipated, the scheme has been a success.
So far, in just one year, £2.8 million has been raised at a £1 levy per night. That equates (obviously) to 2.8 million visitors to this city, our web design headquarters.
Start delving deep and it’s not difficult to understand why however.
Take the football clubs here – Manchester City and Manchester United (as well of course not forgetting Bury, Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, Stockport County, Salford City FC, FC United of Manchester, Altrincham, Rochdale).

Only recently, Carlo Ancelotti and his stellar Madrid team with Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos et al stayed in the Lowry Hotel on the Salford side of the Irwell with their legions of fans making the journey, with Copenhagen FC fans being in the city centre not long before.
Manchester City have been responsible too for huge regeneration in the former dilapidated area of east Manchester, Eastlands. The Velodrome, National Squash Centre, and multiple new residential developments, along with the Ashton Metrolink route, have seen Sportcity boom.

That area was developed back in 2002 for the Commonwealth Games, and has seen exponential growth since.
Old Trafford and Manchester United are global (if fading) superstars. There is the iconic Hotel Football close by and the industrial behemoth of Trafford Park. Again, the team has a worldwide fan base and often hosts European football, adding to the footfall.
Media City UK is another landmark development on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal, with it being the base of ITV, the BBC, the Imperial War Museum North close by and a slew of restaurants and businesses all served by a (slow) tram link from the city centre to Eccles.

Brownfield sites are seeing lift shafts emerge at a fast rate from the damp Manc foundations, with the Beetham Tower (now 18 years old) being an obvious high-rise of the city’s ambitions. They’ve been joined by new residential and commercial towers in Spinningfields, Deansgate Square, New Jackson Square and numerous new places to live and work on Great Ancoats Street, stretching its development tentacles to places like Ancoats and New Islington.
The shopping and culinary scene in Manchester is booming too. There are high end outlets like End Clothing, Selfridges, Boss, Harvey Nichols, Reiss, Canada Goose, Hugo Boss, all straddled on the new walkway, Cathedral Gates.
Diversity in Manchester’s diversity
There are 220 languages spoken in Manchester and as many cuisines – you can pick any food you fancy from Ethiopian to Polish and are spoilt for choice with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Pakistani and Turkish food, to name just a handful.
There is a burgeoning café culture too, stretching across the city from Ancoats and the Green Quarter near Angel Meadow through the iconic Northern Quarter through town to the historic Roman area of Castlefield, birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
Music runs through the Manchester DNA too and is still a major events with many concert halls for all genres of taste dotted around the city. The new Coop Live arena, near Sportcity, is set to transform the events scene further too.
The universities are incredibly popular too, bringing in family visits, guest speakers and lecturers. These all add to the tourist tax numbers.
So.
Manchester introduced a tourist tax in April 2023.
One year, 2.8 million visitors and £2.8 million in revenue later, there is no doubt it is a success and a blueprint for other cities.
