Instead of espousing the virtues of freelance, I thought I’d do a tilt job and talk about 10 things I actually miss:

  1. Colleagues
  2. Regular pay
  3. Weekends
  4. Holidays
  5. The Friday feeling
  6. Working with young people (I was a teacher if you’ve not sussed it)
  7. The commute – only if under 30 minutes mind
  8. Workplace banter
  9. Paying into a pension
  10. The routine of it all

I’m in my fifth year now of self-employment, on the cusp of “retirement” as a teacher and there’s only one thing I’d miss if I went back into paid employment:

The 10 points above are shit compared with that 7 letter word.

If you’re weighing up setting up your business, do it.

I have only regret – that I didn’t do it 20 years ago.
